Among the neighborhoods to stay in Seoul, Hongdae is definitely my favorite. Part of the district of Mapo-gu, it is one of the city’s liveliest areas, a true gathering place for young people who perform in the streets singing, playing, and dancing, all dreaming of a future in show business.
It is no coincidence that Hongdae is considered Seoul’s quintessential university district. In fact, its name is an abbreviation of Hongik Daehakgyo (Hongik University).
Hongdae is not exactly downtown, but thanks to the Hongik University subway station you’ll have no trouble getting around. Although it’s not right next to the main tourist attractions, the area makes up for it with an incredible local vibe: wonderful cafés, trendy boutiques, restaurants, street food, and unique design architecture. With its low-rise buildings and alleys filled with young people, Hongdae will win you over immediately.
Since it’s such a popular spot among students and travelers, you’ll always find plenty of options for both hotels and restaurants, from budget-friendly stays to extra-luxurious experiences.
As always, my criteria for selecting hotels are very strict when it comes to value for money. In this list, you’ll find the best hotels and guesthouses with a focus on price and quality, so you don’t waste time searching. We’ll start with the top 4-star hotels and work our way down to budget accommodations and guesthouses. There are no 5-star hotels in Hongdae, but the 4-star options I’ll recommend are already top-notch solutions.
The Mercure Ambassador Seoul Hongdae is located just 5 minutes from Hongik University station and features a refined, modern style. If you book the Superior Deluxe room, you’ll also enjoy a complimentary minibar.
To pay homage to the neighborhood where it is located, the L7 Hongdae by LOTTE is filled with artistic details, posters, and creative corners. Its highlight is the rooftop terrace, complete with a pool that makes coming back to the hotel after a day out incredibly relaxing. Prices are also quite reasonable for what it offers.
The RYSE, Autograph Collection Seoul by Marriott is probably the most artistic hotel in Seoul. Its rooms are an explosion of art and design. Try to book a room with a city view, some of them offer stunning panoramic vistas of Seoul.
The 9 Brick Hotel has interiors and rooms so well designed and distinctive that it feels far more expensive than it actually is. It’s definitely one of the best-value hotels in Hongdae within this price range.
The Amanti Hotel Seoul also looks much more luxurious than its real cost, offering excellent value for money. Rooms are spacious, many with beautiful city views. The property also features a rooftop terrace and an outdoor pool.
The Holiday Inn Express Seoul Hongdae is my favorite hotel in this category. Not only is it brand new, but it also has the best location in Hongdae, sitting directly above the Hongik University station. Inside you’ll find a 24-hour convenience store and a WOW Exchange. Personally tested and highly recommended.
Only 500 meters from the subway stop, Hi There Guesthouse has everything you need for a practical stay in Seoul. Rooms include a patio, and some also offer a view of the indoor garden. An American breakfast is included in the rate.
Dream House is located 8 minutes from Hapjeong Station and 10 minutes from Hongdae Street. The rooms are spacious and fully equipped with essentials. Despite being a guesthouse, staff is available 24/7 just like in a hotel.
Neat House Hongdae is about 10 minutes from Hongik University Station. You’ll appreciate this guesthouse for its bright and modern decor. All rooms come with mini-fridges and kettles, and some even have a balcony.
