T-Money Card: the most convenient way to get around Seoul

If you are planning a trip to South Korea, especially to Seoul or major cities such as Busan and Daegu, one thing you absolutely need is a T-Money Card. This rechargeable transportation card offers a convenient and affordable way to travel on subways, buses, and even taxis, making your trip around Korea easier, more efficient, and budget-friendly.

The T-Money Card is so practical that I recommend purchasing one as soon as you arrive at the airport. If you prefer a more comfortable option like a private transfer from Incheon Airport, you can easily buy the card later at any convenience store or subway station in Seoul.

What is the T-Money Card used for?

The T-Money Card is an essential rechargeable card used for public transportation in South Korea, especially in cities such as Seoul, Busan, Gyeongju, Jeonju, Daejeon, and Gwangju. With a single card, you can easily travel on the subway, buses, and even taxis, without having to purchase individual tickets every time.

In addition to transportation, the T-Money Card can also be used at convenience stores, vending machines, and many participating shops. While public transportation in South Korea is already very affordable, using a T-Money Card gives you a small discount on every ride, helping you save a considerable amount of money throughout your trip, especially if you plan to move around the city frequently.

Where to buy the T-Money Card and how much does it cost?

The T-Money Card is widely available at subway stations, train stations, and participating locations such as convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-ELEVEN, Ministop, emart24, and Story Way) for around 3.000 KRW. However, most travelers choose to buy one immediately upon arrival at Incheon Airport for about 4.000 KRW, so they can start using public transportation right away. You’ll find many vending machines there, like the one shown in the photo below.
Special editions of the T-Money Card are also very common, featuring unique designs such as Line Friends characters (you can see some of my own special T-Money Cards in the article images). These limited-design cards make great travel souvenirs and usually cost between 4.000 and 7.000 KRW. Please note that T-Money Cards are sold without credit, so you’ll need to top them up later using dedicated recharge kiosks or at convenience stores.

WOWPASS and Discover Seoul Pass

It is also possible to purchase, at some dedicated outlets, versions of the T-Money Card that include additional services in addition to transportation payments:

WOWPASS: this is both a payment card and a T-Money Card in one. For 5,000 KRW, you get a full-fledged Korean payment card accepted almost everywhere. If you don’t use multi-currency cards like Revolut to reduce exchange fees, this can be a great solution, since as a Korean card it comes with no foreign transaction fees. WOWPASS can be purchased at WOW Exchange counters, including those at Incheon Airport, and can be reloaded in euros without issue. The T-Money function inside, however, must be topped up in cash with Korean won, as explained in the next section. If you choose the WOWPASS, it is also recommended to download the app to take advantage of all its features.
Discover Seoul Pass: this card includes a built-in T-Money function and offers excellent value if you plan to visit multiple attractions in Seoul. Available in 24, 48, and 72-hour formats, it grants free admission to many landmarks and discounts for numerous activities. With good planning, the 72-hour version can save you a significant amount of money. The card can be purchased easily online.

Climate Card Seoul: how it works and when it’s worth it

The Climate Card is a prepaid transportation card valid only in Seoul that allows unlimited rides on public transportation such as the subway and buses, as well as access to Seoul Bike (Ttareungi), for up to 30 days after activation. It can be a great option if you are planning a longer stay in Seoul and want to save money on transportation.

How to top up the T-Money Card

You can also top up your card for the first time directly at the airport. Personally, once I arrive in Seoul, I usually recharge my card at the convenience store below my hotel, and I recommend doing the same, especially if you are arriving in the city with a convenient and comfortable private transfer from Incheon Airport. During your trip, you’ll probably end up having your own favorite convenience store that you visit at the beginning and end of each day.

The card can also be topped up at all subway stations using dedicated recharge kiosks. Simply select English as the language, place the card on the designated area, and proceed with the top-up using either a credit card or cash.

Nota importante: fino a poco tempo fa la ricarica della T-Money Card si poteva effettuare soltanto in contanti, dal 2026 è in corso il rinnovamento dei chioschi automatici. Questo significa che in alcune stazioni (specialmente le più importanti), oggi è già possibile pagare le ricariche anche con la carta, ma occhio, cercate di avere un po’ di contanti sempre con voi per la T-Money Card perché ci vorrà tempo affinchè tutti chioschi della Corea vengano aggiornati. Ad oggi, le ricariche nei convenience store invece si pagano sempre in contanti.

How to use the T-Money Card

The card works like any other contactless payment card, simply tap it on the reader. When taking a bus, always remember to tap the card both when boarding and when getting off to ensure you are charged the correct fare. You can also use it to pay at convenience stores, in some shops (look for the T-Money logo displayed), and in taxis.

Here are some useful tips on how to make the most of your T-Money Card during your trip to Korea:

Buy one and top it up as soon as you arrive in Seoul so you can start enjoying its benefits right away
Make sure to check your balance while traveling so you don’t get stuck at the subway gates with an empty card. Your remaining balance will appear on the display every time you tap through a gate
It is recommended to top up at least 20,000–30,000 KRW each time. For extra peace of mind, you can recharge even more without any issue.
It’s also a great backup payment method: when shopping at convenience stores or taking a taxi, you can easily pay with your T-Money Card if you prefer or if your credit card is not working properly
If you plan your expenses carefully, you probably won’t need to recover the remaining balance on your card. However, if you are unable to use all the money loaded onto it and your remaining balance does not exceed 20,000 KRW, you can request a balance refund at participating convenience stores, T-Money Service Centers inside subway stations, or at T-Money Town near Seoul Station (Seoul City Tower). Please note that a 500 KRW service fee applies to refunds.
